Tartar is a hard, visible compound that is yellowish or brown, that collects on the surface of the teeth near the gum line. It results from the buildup of dental plaque. Dental plaque is made up of several billion bacteria which can move under the gum tissue and cause significant damage. Tartar is formed during a mineralization process which results in the death of bacteria. However, it will help new plaque build up since the bacteria in the plaque can easily cling to it. In other words, the build-up of bacteria turns into tartar, which promotes the attachment of new bacteria, which leads to continued damage of oral health.
When tartar builds up on the teeth of cats and dogs, it can cause a lot of irritation and inflammation to the gums. Preventing its accumulation is therefore an important element in oral care. Unlike dental plaque, tartar cannot be removed with a simple toothbrushing, it will have to be removed by a veterinarian!
